What is a Tag Group?

A Tag Group is a reporting dimension you define for one type of Library entity. For example: a “Company size” group on segments with the values SMB, Mid-market, and Enterprise, or an “Objection category” group on objections with Pricing, Security, and Timing. The values in a group, called Tags, are mutually exclusive: an entity carries at most one value per group. An entity can belong to as many groups as its type has. Tag groups can be defined on segments, personas, use cases, proof points, references, competitors, alternatives, buying triggers, objections, core features, products, services, and solutions.

Why tag entities?

Tags let you ask questions about groups of entities instead of one entity at a time. Octave rolls up outcome stats by tag value, giving won, lost, and open deal counts, win rate, correlated won amount, and finding and call counts per value. That answers questions like “Do we win more against incumbents or against newer tools?” or “Which objection category costs us the most deals?” Tag groups are also a dimension in event analytics, so you can rank or cross-tabulate events by tag value.

Assigning values

Values can be assigned by hand or inferred automatically:
  • By hand. Assign a value to an entity, which replaces any value it had in that group, or clear it.
  • Auto-infer. Mark a group as inferable and Octave uses an LLM to pick a value for each new entity of that type. Run a backfill to infer values for existing entities that don’t have one yet. A backfill never overwrites a value, and never re-assigns one that someone explicitly cleared. Each inferred entity costs one LLM call; use dryRun to preview a backfill first.

Changing values

Renaming a value keeps it on every entity that has it. To delete a value that is in use, reassign its entities to another value, either an existing one or a new one created in the same call. A group must keep at least one value; delete the group itself to remove it entirely, which also removes every assignment in it for good.
